Do I need a boating license to rent a bareboat in St. Thomas, USVI? While a formal USCG captain’s license is not required to rent a recreational bareboat in the U.S. Virgin Islands, you must be at least 25 years old and demonstrate prior coastal powerboat operating, anchoring, and mooring experience during our dockside checkout. If your state requires a Boater Education Card, bringing it is helpful.

Can I take a self-drive bareboat rental to the British Virgin Islands (BVI)? No. Due to international marine insurance regulations and BVI Commercial Recreational Vessel licensing laws, self-drive bareboat day rentals from St. Thomas are permitted in U.S. Virgin Islands waters only (St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island, Lovango, and Great St. James). To visit the BVI, book one of our captained BVI powerboat charters.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my bareboat rental? Safety always comes first. If small-craft advisories, high swells, or severe weather make boating unsafe on your scheduled date, we will work with you to reschedule your bareboat rental to a calmer day during your trip or provide a weather refund in accordance with our cancellation policy.
